What 'biomedicine spin-off potential' covers

BioM defines biomedicine broadly: innovative active ingredients and therapies; platform technologies for prediction, prognostics, or diagnostics in biotech; digital health innovations with biotech grounding; novel drug-delivery systems; precision-medicine platforms; bioinformatics pipelines with clinical use. The keyword is 'biotechnology benefit' - pure software with a healthcare label is not the m4 audience.

How BioM judges the application

BioM (the network organisation for Munich/Bavaria biotech) runs a two-stage review: written proposal (~30 pages: science, IP, market, team, work plan, budget) plus a 30-minute oral pitch in front of a jury of biotech investors and serial founders. The jury weights: scientific excellence (~35%), IP position and freedom-to-operate (~25%), commercial path (~25%), team (~15%). Spin-off realisation since BioM started the award: 17 companies founded from m4 winners.

Coaching is half the prize

Beyond the €500k, m4 winners get intensive BioM coaching: regulatory strategy (BfArM, EMA, FDA), IP portfolio building, founder-team complementation hiring, investor matching with the Munich biotech VC network. BioM has placed multiple m4 cohorts into seed rounds within 6 months of the award. The combined value of the coaching consistently exceeds the cash component.
