TUM IDEA Award: the entry-level Munich startup competition for TUM-affiliated teams

TUM reads affiliation broadly: current Bachelor/Master/PhD students, recent alumni (5 years cap from latest degree), and TUM scientific staff (postdocs, professors, scientific assistants). At least one team member must hold the TUM affiliation - the rest of the team can be from anywhere. This is the cheapest TUM-internal validation a team can get; it's also the warm-up before applying to UnternehmerTUM accelerators.

The tailored workshop runs over 3-4 sessions: business-model canvas critique, finance basics (cap table, EXIST eligibility check, taxation choices), and individual pitch training (10-15 minutes per team with a UnternehmerTUM coach). The pitch training alone is worth more than the prize money - external coaching at this level costs €500-1,000 per hour.

Winners go onto the UnternehmerTUM watchlist: warm intros to TUM Venture Labs (the domain-specific incubators - SynBio, Quantum, AdditiveLab, Robotics, etc.), priority access to TUM Bridge-to-Innovation and Proof of Concept Förderung, and eligibility hints toward the TUM IDEA Award winners' alumni network for future cohort matching.
