Key takeaways

Total combined prize pool across the five: ~€400k+ per year.
All five are free to enter and equity-free; the value is feedback + media reach + prize money in that order.
Each is regionally anchored. Pick by where your company will sit, not just by where you currently are.

BPW Berlin-Brandenburg - the longest-running flagship

Running since 1996. €56k total prize pool. Three-stage process (October idea → February concept → May full business plan) with written feedback after each stage. The strongest regional Businessplan-Wettbewerb in eastern Germany. Sector-open; covers both Berlin and Brandenburg founders.

start2grow - Dortmund-run, open nationwide

Run by Wirtschaftsförderung Dortmund. €94k total prize pool - one of the largest in any regional Wettbewerb. Open to founders from across Germany; particularly strong for digital and technology innovations. Six-month coaching programme attached. Application typically autumn through May.

StartUp-Impuls Hannover - €100k+ for the Hannover region

Run by hannoverimpuls. €100k+ total prize pool across multiple categories. Annual cycle. Strong for founders who plan to incorporate in the Hannover region; the regional anchor unlocks downstream regional programmes too.

Gründerwettbewerb Nordhessen - regional with national reach

Nationally open but with a Nordhessen focus. Three-phase format (idea, concept, business plan) with strong mentoring via the regional ScienceTandem network. Good for founders looking for senior commercial advice without the competitive pressure of the largest contests.

BayStartUp - the Bavarian package (three regional + state finals)

BayStartUp runs the three regional Businessplan-Wettbewerbe (Northern, Southern, Eastern Bavaria) that feed into a state-level finale. €85k total prize money. Sector-open. The real value is access to ~800 active business angels and 100+ VCs in BayStartUP's network. Best fit for Bavarian-incorporated teams.

Stacking strategy

These five don't directly compete for the same applicants - they're regionally exclusive. A typical Berlin team applies to BPW + KfW Award + Deep Tech Award Berlin; a Munich team applies to BayStartUp + KfW Award + Münchner Businessplan-Wettbewerb. The KfW Award is the only one all five regions' winners can also enter without conflict.
